“Light of the Past”
Oil on canvas
140cm x 70cm
This piece is inspired by the Knights Templar carvings in the Royston cave. The style and composition are a reimagined version of a plate from Joseph Bedlam’s book The Origins and Use of the Royston Cave (1884). The soft orange glow of the candlelight brings warmth and tranquility to the scene. The prominent figures presented include Saint Catherine of Alexandria (left), identifiable by her yellow dress with embroidered cross and Saint Christopher (right) with a child on his shoulder.
The painting was commissioned by Inn Gear for The Manor House pub in Royston.

My aim was to stick to the original composition as closely as possible. I included elements such as the reaching hand and praying figures to represent those unidentified figures in the plate.
