In February 2021 I decided to take part in the 28 portrait challenge on Instagram. I wanted the challenge my self to more than just portraits, I really wanted to put a heavy focus on lighting. I settled on doing lighting studies of 3D animated films to really further my knowledge of character lighting.
My aim with every painting was to explore different styles, angles, colour schemes, weather conditions and types of characters. I didn’t want to focus specifically on any one studio or just long form films, I wanted to explore the short films also since they tend to have more experimental styles.
My main takeaway from this whole challenge can be summarised in one sentence; don’t be afraid of vibrant colours. I think I tend to lean towards the lighter pastel shades
